Also referred to as a CAT scan, Computerized Axial Tomography, or Computerized Tomography, produces cross-sectional images of any body part, giving a unique and detailed glimpse of organs and other vital body structures. Incredibly accurate and non-invasive, CT scans also are quick and painless, requiring just 5 to 30 minutes to perform.
How to prepare for your CT scan
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing, preferably without metal objects such as zippers and snaps that can affect the image.
Depending on your specific test, you also may be asked to refrain from eating or drinking anything for an hour or longer before the exam.
You should not eat or drink within 4 hours of the exam for scans of the brain, chest or neck.
If there is any possibility that you are pregnant, inform your doctor or the technologist prior to the scan.
For scans of the abdomen
- Nothing to eat or drink 4 hours prior to your exam.
- Must drink two bottles of oral contrast prior to your exam. Follow instructions on the bottle.
- If your referring physician does not provide the oral contrast, it may be picked up at our office.
For pelvic scans
- Nothing to eat or drink 4 hours prior to your exam.
- Must drink two bottles of oral contrast prior to your exam.
- If your referring physician does not provide the oral contrast it may be picked up at our office.
